Itinerary for Mastering Light and Shadows – A Plein-Air Workshop

🕒 Time: 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM (please arrive earlier to set up)

9:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Arrival and Setup

  • Meet at the designated location at Leo Carrillo Beach.
  • Set up your materials and easels (rented kits will be provided at this time).
  • Enjoy a brief introduction to the day’s activities.

9:30 AM – 10:00 AM: Workshop Overview and Demo Introduction

  • Overview of the day’s goals, including key concepts on light and shadow.
  • Introduction to plein-air techniques.

10:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Live Demonstration

  • Watch a live demo focusing on capturing natural light and shadows in the landscape.
  • Observe brushwork, color mixing, and composition techniques in real-time.

11:00 AM – 12:30 PM: First Painting Session

  • Begin your first painting, applying the techniques demonstrated.
  • Daniel will provide individual feedback and guidance as you work.

12:30 PM – 1:00 PM: Lunch Break

  • Bring your own lunch and enjoy a relaxing break by the beach.
  • Use this time to discuss ideas with fellow students or ask questions.

1:00 PM – 2:30 PM: Second Painting Session

  • Start a second piece, or continue refining your first one.
  • Focus on enhancing your use of light and shadow based on the morning’s feedback.

2:30 PM – 3:00 PM: Group Review and Feedback

  • Gather as a group to review selected works.
  • Daniel will offer constructive feedback and tips for improvement.
  • Open Q&A for any lingering questions.

  • Apply final touches to your paintings with guidance.

Color & Composition, Edgar Payne’s Way!

Workshop Overview:

This workshop is designed to immerse artists in the principles of color and composition as taught by Edgar Payne, with a focus on landscape painting.

Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on painting, participants will learn how to create strong, balanced compositions and use color effectively to capture the essence of outdoor scenes.


Schedule:

10:30 AM – 11:00 AM: Welcome and Introduction

  • Introduction to Edgar Payne and his significance in landscape painting.
  • Overview of the day’s schedule and objectives.

11:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Lecture on Composition

  • Discuss the key compositional structures (e.g., S-curve, steelyard, radial) as outlined by Edgar Payne.
  • Analyze examples of Payne’s work to identify these structures in practice.
  • Tips on creating balance, rhythm, and focal points in compositions.

12:00 PM – 12:30 PM: Demonstration on Compositional Sketching

  • Live demonstration of how to quickly sketch out a landscape composition using Payne’s methods.
  • Emphasis on simplifying scenes into basic shapes and values.

12:30 PM – 1:30 PM: Lunch Break

  • Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch or visit nearby eateries.
  • Optional: Casual discussion on favorite landscape paintings and compositions.

1:30 PM – 2:30 PM: Lecture on Color Theory

  • Introduction to Payne’s approach to color, including value, chroma, and temperature.
  • Discussion on how to use color to convey mood, depth, and light in landscape painting.
  • Analysis of Payne’s palette and how to create harmonious color schemes.

2:30 PM – 3:00 PM: Demonstration on Color Application

  • Live demonstration of color mixing and application techniques using Payne’s methods.
  • Focus on achieving realistic and compelling landscapes with a limited palette.

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Hands-On Painting Session
